Knowadays graduate Viktorie had always wanted to work as a book editor, and when she found our Becoming A Proofreader course she knew that it was the next step to get her to where she wanted to be. We wanted to hear more about Viktorie’s new job, so we caught up with her to ask a few questions. Check out her responses below.

Hi, Viktorie! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

I’ve always wanted to work as a book editor. Then during the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself with no job and too much time on my hands.

Then I came across an article on freelance proofreading and realized that it could be the perfect first step toward reaching my goal.

What were you doing before you started the course?

I was in the middle of a gap year I took after finishing secondary school. Mostly, I was getting my life together, teaching one-on-one English conversation to ESL students, and working on becoming more responsible and productive.

How has your transition to working as a freelance proofreader with Proofed been?

Looking back, I feel that the transition was actually very smooth.

Of course, there was a certain adjustment period. But the Proofed team is very supportive and the feedback given is always on point. Also, the flexible work schedule is excellent.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

It really is hard to name just one! But among all the good things that have come from completing this course, perhaps the most prominent benefit is how it has helped me truly take steps towards reaching my career goals and creating the life I wish to have.

How has life changed for you as a freelance proofreader?

To tell the truth, my life has changed far more dramatically than I initially expected. I think about writing differently; it feels much easier and more intuitive than before.

I am also more self-sufficient and organized, which is always good. The most important thing, however, is that working as a proofreader brings me joy.

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

I most appreciate contributing to the creation of smoothly written documents. Helping a client achieve good text flow is my favorite part of proofreading.

Have you been self-employed before? How are you finding it?

I have been teaching one-on-one English conversation as a freelancer for a few years now. Although there are some downsides to self-employment, I have always found it preferable to other ways of working.

Is there anything else you want to share?

My advice would be to go for it. If you have a passion for the English language and feel that you would enjoy proofreading, this course is a wonderful opportunity to harness that interest and ability even if you don’t have professional experience.

I love working as an editor/proofreader and realize that enjoying my occupation is an extremely valuable experience – one that became realistic when I decided to build on my strengths and respect the path I wished to take.
