One benefit of freelancing is that you can choose your own work hours. If you’re tired of the daily routine in your current job, then, Knowadays can help you take back control. To prove it, we’ve spoken to Denise, a recent graduate of our Becoming A Proofreader course.

Hi, Denise! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

I had been searching for a while for an ideal proofreading course to put my English language and communication degree to good use. I also wanted to find a way of making a living that would give me more control over my work hours. When I found this course, I went for it because it came with a chance to start working, and earning, straight away!

What were you doing before you started the course?

I was working full time in a tiring job and knew that I needed to cut my hours down. I also wanted to do something that would stimulate my mind. Passing the course enabled me to reduce my hours and do interesting work that keeps my brain cells happy.

Was there anything in the course you found surprising or challenging?

Definitely! Learning about formatting documents in Microsoft Word was the most difficult part for me. I sometimes felt like tearing my hair out, but the lessons helped a lot.

How have you found the transition to working as a freelance proofreader?

It was a straightforward process. The team at Proofed explained everything clearly, and I was never once confused about what would happen next. That helped to quell any nerves.

How has life changed for you now as a freelance proofreader?

I haven’t been self-employed before. But I now have more control over the hours and days I work and the amount of work I do. That, in my opinion, is the best way to work.

What is your day-to-day work like? And where do you work?

Usually, I’ll accept a big document to work on in the evening, then start on it around 7-7:30am the next day. I have a desk I often sit at for this, or I might sit at my table in the sitting room if I feel like a change of scenery. Once I’ve completed the document, I might pop out to run errands, but I keep my eye out for more work I can take on when I get back.

Sometimes, I just stick to the one document for the day because I’ve got other things to do.

Denise, a recent graduate of Proofreading Academy.

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

Helping people to express themselves clearly and being able to set my own schedule.

Do you have a favourite type of document or subject area to proofread?

I enjoy many types of documents, but I especially love anything related to psychology, the brain and health (including mental health).

Are you making enough money?!

I’m making a decent amount, which I’m happy with!

What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?

I love learning languages and am currently working on my French listening skills, so I often listen to French videos and podcasts.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

It has not only given me a skill that I can use to earn myself an income and not depend solely on a job; it has also helped me to improve my writing tenfold.

Was the course good value for money?

Absolutely. I made my money back in less than two weeks.

Is there anything else you want to share?

If you’re the independent type, are interested in the English language, want to help others improve their writing and love the idea of setting your own work hours, do the course!
